HDD info in advanced mode meaning
In Advanced mode SIGuardian
shows your:
ATA/ATAPI
- version numbers of ATA/ATAPI standards supported by your HDD. Most modern
HDD supports 4 version of standard.
Maximum PIO supported
mode - PIO is the faster mode of transfer operation when default,
but it uses the CPU for transferring data. Maximum mode always supports
lower modes - for example, if your HDD supports PIO mode 4 - it also supports
PIO 3, PIO 2-1
Maximum Multi
Word DMA (MWDMA) mode - multi word DMA mode is the mode of transfer
operations that use DMA - so it doesn't use the CPU while transferring
data - so you can do make anything else while your HDD is working.
Ultra DMA mode
- new mode supported mostly in Pentium and other high-end systems. In
this mode it also keeps the CPU free while the system transfers data,
but it can work faster than MWDMA mode.
In Advanced mode, SIGuardian
shows different technical information about possible hard disk work modes
and standards supported by this HDD.
Supported standards
SIGuardian reports about which standards
your hard disk supports.
Today these standards are present:
|
Standard |
Year
of approval |
Features |
|
ATA-2 |
|
Support of data transfer modes PIO mode 2-3,
DMA mode 1-2 (look at the description below), LBA, enhanced device identify
commands (Identify Drive) |
|
ATA/ATAPI-3 |
|
Support of ATAPI devices (CD-ROM, ZIP&ldots;),
S.M.A.R.T. |
|
ATA/ATAPI-4 |
1996 |
UDMA data transfer modes (look description
below) |
|
ATA/ATAPI-5 |
|
UDMA-66 |
|
ATA/ATAPI-6 |
in development |
UDMA-100 |
SIGuardian can reports
what your HDD supports one of the following data transfer modes:
|
Mode of operation |
Maximum
data
transfer rate |
|
PIO modes |
|
PIO mode 0 |
3.3 Mb/sec |
|
PIO mode 1 |
5.2 Mb/sec |
|
PIO mode 2 |
8.3 Mb/sec |
|
PIO mode 3 |
11.1 Mb/sec |
|
PIO mode 4 |
16.6 Mb/sec |
|
|
|
|
DMA modes |
|
Single word mode 0 |
2.1 Mb/sec |
|
Single word mode 1 |
4.2 Mb/sec |
|
Single word mode 2 |
8.3 Mb/sec |
|
Multiword mode 0 |
4.2 Mb/sec |
|
Multiword mode 1 |
13.3 Mb/sec |
|
Multiword mode 2 |
16.6 Mb/sec |
|
|
|
|
Ultra DMA modes |
|
Ultra DMA-33 |
33.3 Mb/sec |
|
Ultra DMA-66 |
66 Mb/sec |
|
Ultra DMA-100 (ATA-100) |
100 Mb/sec |
Moreover, consider that in transfer modes
"PIO mode #" the CPU is used to transfer data, so in such modes
CPU utilization is higher than in DMA or UDMA modes.
